Kuzu is an electronic music producer from Livorno, Italy. He’s just released an album of eclectic sounds and beats called Beyond The Painting. Combining electronic production techniques with acoustic sounds, natural environment samples, glitches, lo-fi effects, hip hop grooves, and abstract sounds, it comes together well as a complete release.

Nowhere Near The Exit is the second track of the album, is built around a descending riff that reminds of a 90’s electronica, in a Portishead kind of way. Whilst you’re lulled into the groove the mix glitches unexpectedly and takes you out of your comfort zone…

Coming in at track number four is The Prison Beyond Sky And Time. It’s drum & bass inspired, yet with abstract sounds and processes taking this away from the confines of genre. It begins with processed sounds and effects, overlaid with a rolling chord progression that is soon complemented by a very dirty bassline and accompanying kick and percussion. It’s taken on a little journey with melodic fragments added to the mix until we get clearer and more defined beats later in the mix…

Fragments of Conciusness is the fifth track of the album, beginning with some prepared piano sounding melodic fragments, this quickly transends into something darker with menacing overtones and synth textures. This then quickly moves into abstract beat territory adding a powerful tribal groove to proceedings…

Nostalgia begins with bird and water sounds that are reminiscent of a childhood visit to the zoo. There’s some piano melody to accompany this memory that is soon built upon with a laid back beat. It’s simple, yet interesting, and pushed along with metallic percussion. We’re soon transported into a bigger production with shimmering and fragmented textures moving around the mix. It’s got darker, yet still playful…

The Park Under the Waterfall is the penultimate track on the album, and fairly extended compared to the rest of the album at over 9 and a half minutes long. It’s ambient, yet with harmonic transitions that keep things moving, underpinned by reverb processed, watery samples placing you in the zone. The production has dynamic leaps that keep you on your toes, and lifting the production away from it being an ambient track, yet still being minimal in focus and approach…

It’s a great album, very relaxing, yet with a lot of elements to really chow down on. You can listen to the whole album on Spotify…
